Bell: ‘We have to match Sutton physically – and then play football’

3 March 2023

Lee Bell says Crewe Alexandra will take the game to in-form Sutton when they visit for the first time ever tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

The Gander Green side have won three on the spin, and only lost one in 11, in a run which has put them in Play-Off contention.

But Crewe are amid a healthy run of five without loss, and Manager Bell says his side will be aiming to extend that.

Bell said: “Sutton is the first of some really tough fixtures we have coming up and I’m looking forward to hitting them head on.

“Let’s not sit back, let’s have a right good go, get a good points tally and see some progression.

“Sutton have taken to EFL football really well. They recruit well, and they have evolved as the season has gone on.

“People have been saying we need to get ready for a physical game and for lots of balls coming into our box, but they are playing good stuff with a lot of confidence and energy at the moment.

“We have to match them in the battle but also come out on top when the football is played.

Crewe edged it 1-0 thanks to a Courtney Baker-Richardson strike when the sides met for the first time in August.

Defender Connor O’Riordan will serve a one-match suspension, but fit-again Baker-Richardson and Charlie Colkett are in contention to figure.
