Hatters spirit can be Alex inspiration, says boss

5 June 2023

The success of Luton Town can be an inspiration to Crewe Alexandra next season.

That’s according to Manager Lee Bell, who says the togetherness and team spirit the Hatters showed as they beat the odds to reach the Premier League is a lesson for everybody.

Luton carried their underdogs tag all the way to Wembley, where they defeated Coventry in the Play-Off Final.

Now Bell wants The Railwaymen to adopt some of their principles, in what is sure to be a tough League Two in 2023-24.

He said: “We’ve got some big clubs entering the EFL from the division below, with spending power, and some good teams coming down too, so it will be just as difficult as it was this year.

“It’ll be a really competitive league with lots of teams already being tipped for success.

“We have to concentrate on what we are going to be doing. I listened to (Luton manager) Rob Edwards a lot; I think he’s spot on that that type of togetherness can take you a long way.

“I want that type of mentality and togetherness, and we will prepare our players and staff as best we can.”

Luton endured a five-year stay in non-league which ended in 2014. Just nine years later, working with a tight budget and often against much bigger teams, they have returned to the top flight for the first time since 1992.
