Bell: ‘Ireland honour can spur O’Riordan on’

6 June 2023

Connor O’Riordan must use his latest international call-up as a spur to nail down a starting place for Crewe Alexandra next season.

That’s according to Manager Lee Bell, who has backed the homegrown defender to make more progress in 2023-24.

The 19-year-old has been called up for Ireland Under-21s to play in three friendly games later this month.

O’Riordan, who made a total of 39 senior appearances on loan at Raith Rovers and for Crewe last season, will be in the squad for games against Gabon, Ukraine, and Kuwait, between June 13-19.

Bell said: “The call-up is great recognition for Connor, his family, and the club.

“He really wants to do well and he has to kick on again next year. His challenge is to grab a shirt and become a mainstay in the team.”

O'Riordan will face stiff competition from the likes of captain Luke Offord and Zac Williams for a spot in the heart of defence next term, while the club is also hoping Player-of-the-Season Rod McDonald will sign a fresh deal.

Bell added: “Connor was brilliant in the way he handled his loan earlier in the season; the feedback we got from it, and how he performed on and off the pitch.

“He brought that back with him. He’s a good player and he trains very well, which makes a massive difference. His levels and quality are very high.”
