Match Report | Whitchurch 0 Crewe 5

11 July 2023

Crewe Alexandra ran out comfortable winners at Whitchurch Alport in their second friendly of the summer.

The Railwaymen wore down a youthful home side to record a 5-0 victory in front of a healthy crowd at Yockings Park.

A first-half penalty from Christopher Long set the ball rolling, and second-half strikes by Max Woodcock, Elliot Nevitt, Owen Lunt, and Regan Griffiths, twisted the knife.

It was a worthwhile workout for Lee Bell's men, with 22 players all getting minutes under their belts in an entertaining game.

The game was barely five minutes old when the referee adjudged that Rio Adebisi’s shot had cannoned off the arms of an Alport defender. Long, wearing the captain’s armband, made no mistake from the spot.

Alport twice went close to levelling, but keeper Harvey Davies made a super save from an Ollie Pope lob before Lyndon Campbell rattled the bar from outside the box.

Jack Powell’s direct free kick brought a save from the home keeper just before the 20-minute mark.

The hosts defended deep and frustrated the Alex for the most part, but Long was just a whisker away on the stroke of half time when his curling effort clipped the bar.

The Alex doubled their lead six minutes into the second half when Joel Tabiner got down the right and found sub Woodcock who finished at the far post.

On 57 minutes Nevitt fired an angled drive across the keeper and into the corner to make it 3-0, before Lunt started and finished a slick move which involved Ryan Cooney to make it 4-0 on 68 minutes.

Griffiths beat the keeper at his near post with a superb free kick to notch Crewe’s fifth of the evening as the Alex moved through the gears, and that completed a good evening's work in Shropshire.

Crewe: Davies (Booth, 60), Adebisi (Cooney, 46), O’Riordan (Kempster-Down, 60), Williams (Billington, 60), Finney (Sass-Davies, 60), Powell (Lunt, 60), Tabiner (Griffiths, 60), Colkett (Woodcock, 46), Tracey (Holicek, 46), Baker-Richardson (Nevitt, 34), Long (Evans, 46).
