Bell: ‘Players showed what it means to them’

18 February 2023

Lee Bell was delighted for his players after their stirring fightback to draw 2-2 at Harrogate.

Crewe trailed 2-0 until the 83rd minute, when Dan Agyei scored his ninth of the season from the penalty spot.

And they salvaged a point thanks to sub Tariq Uwakwe’s 89th minute strike.

Manager Bell said: “You’d always take a point after being 2-0 down away from home.

“I’m really pleased for the players, and I hope the fans who came saw the desire they showed and what it means to them.

“It feels weird because I was getting absolute pelters from behind me, but watching the game I felt we were going to create something.

“That’s part of being a manager, and the fans travelled in their numbers and I hope they got on the bus a lot happier. I thought we showed desire and some quality in the second half.

“We are showing a little bit of consistency, and five points without a defeat means it’s not been a bad week.

Bell reserved some praise for his goalscorers. Agyei is now the club’s top scorer this season, while Uwakwe opened his account for the club.

He added: “Dan did brilliantly to drive into the box, get his body in the way and get goal-side of the defender to win the penalty. He practices penalties in training and he is very good.

“Full credit to Tariq, he’s been out of the team in the last couple of games, but he came on and made a real impact.
