Alex will go on attack at Walsall, says boss

21 February 2023

Lee Bell says Crewe Alexandra will be focused on attacking Walsall tonight (Tuesday, 7.45pm) – regardless of which formation he chooses.

The Railwaymen have adopted a number of different systems of late, and none more so than at Harrogate at the weekend.

After starting in a 3-5-2 shape, Bell and his backroom staff switched to 4-3-3 and finished with 4-2-4 as Crewe fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Now the Manager is mulling over options for the trip to Bank’s Stadium, but says his team will have an offensive outlook however they set up.

Bell said: “Whatever formation we choose to play, I’m trying to do it with attacking intent.

“We have to match what they are doing, and then add bits to our game which we think will counteract.

“Walsall are a really experienced team with an experienced manager in Michael Flynn; I’ve got a lot of time for him - he is a really good guy.

“He has them well-organised; they know their roles and are as honest as they come. They work their socks off and they have some quality.

“Jamille Matt gives them good experience up the front and we will have to work hard to handle that, and Don (Donervon Daniels) is at the back – he's had a good time at Walsall, played most of the games, and I thought he was a good footballer when he was here.”

As he prepares for a sixth game in 18 days, Bell does not expect to have any injured players available.

He gave this update from the treatment room: “Kelvin Mellor has been running over the weekend so his rehab will be stepped up this week.

“Courtney (Baker-Richardson) is being introduced to non-contact training this week with a view to full training the week after.

“David Amoo is still three-to-four weeks away, while Zac (Williams) is working hard but it still some way off.

“Charlie Colkett is struggling with tendonitis in his heel so we are managing his workload the best we can.

“Longy (Christopher Long) has been at St George’s Park the last few weeks, and he is back in the building this week. It’ll probably be four weeks before he is able to be involved with the squad.
