Matchday Guide|Walsall (A)

26 December 2023

Crewe Alexandra will travel to Walsall looking to get back to winning ways on Boxing Day.

Lee Bell's injury-hit squad will aim to climb from their fifth-placed position in League Two, as they face a side they have only lost to once in 19 meetings.

The Opposition

The Saddlers sit 16thth in the Sky Bet League Two having picked up 27 points so far this season - 16 of which have come at home.

In their last five league games, Walsall have picked up two wins and a draw. But they were beaten last time out at Accrington Stanley.

The Gaffer

Matt Sadler, who played 99 games for the Sadlers, took over in April 2023 after Michael Flynn was sacked.

He has taken charge of 33 games for the club and will be aiming to lift them up the table as quickly as possible.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell:” We will not make any excuses (about injuries). We will soldier on through this and the players will not train till they step out against Walsall.”

Matt Sadler: “We have to dust ourselves down and react well (to the defeat at Accrington) on Tuesday. It’s one we want to react to.”

Head-to-Head

Crewe have won 31 of the 77 fixtures played between the two sides - and lost just one of the last 19 games. Walsall have won 25 times and 21 games have ended in a draw.

The sides shared a 2-2 draw at Mornflake Stadium earlier this season. Crewe had to battle back from 2-0 down with Elliott Nevitt and Jack Powell on target.

Match Officials

Scott Jackson will referee the game, assisted by Daniel Gratton and Alex Gray. Stuart Kane will be the fourth official.
