Matchday Guide | Sunderland (A)

8 August 2023

Crewe travel to Sunderland for the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Lee Bell’s men will want to build on Saturday’s positive performance against Mansfield Town and conjure a repeat of the upset against a Championship club that they recorded at Middlesborough in 2019.

The Opposition

Sunderland started the season with a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town. With the tight turnaround, they are likely to use their squad when they face the Alex.

The Gaffer

Sunderland appointed their Tony Mowbray in August last year and he guided them to the Play-Offs last term. Previously, he managed at Blackburn Rovers, Coventry, Middlesborough, Celtic, West Brom and Hibernian.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: “We have to embrace the challenge. Sunderland are getting back toward where they should be and they have a really good manager.”

Tony Mowbray: "We're going to be fine. We're working hard, the crowd are with us - they can see that the team are giving everything they've got."

Team News

Crewe will be without Charlie Colkett (hamstring) and will make checks on a number of players carrying slight knocks.

Trai Hume will be suspended for Sunderland, while Corry Evans, Ross Stewart, Jay Matete and Aji Alese all remain long-term absentees. Jenson Seelt and Elliot Embleton are making good progress in their recoveries, but Elizier Mayenda is sidelined after picking up a hamstring injury.

Head-to-Head

There have been 15 games between the two sides. Crewe have won two and there have been two draws. Sunderland have won 11 games against The Railwaymen. Crewe have not won in the last five meetings between the sides.

Match Officials

The referee for Tuesday’s game is Scott Oldham. Assistant referees are Wayne Grunnill and Connor Brown. The fourth official is Paul Marsden.

Scott Oldham has refereed the Alex three times. Two of the games previously have been cup competitions. Crewe have had one win in those three games - 1-0 against Cheltenham.
