Boss: ‘I’m proud of the players'

30 August 2023

Lee Bell felt his players deserved the applause of the travelling Crewe Alexandra supporters at Vale Park on Tuesday.

His side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties, after holding League One side Port Vale 0-0 in Burslem.

Manager Bell, who was full of praise for the 1,027 sell-out Alex following, said his players deserved plenty of credit.

“I know what this game means to the area and I told the players beforehand that whatever happens, they had to get clapped off the pitch – and I think every player deserved to be clapped off the pitch for what they showed football-wise and the desire they showed,” he said.

“Going out on penalties is a kick in the teeth but there are so many positives to draw from.

“We are going in the right direction; we are a transformed team compared to last year in terms of how we are playing.

“We needed to score when we were on top in the first half, and in the second half they dictated a bit with the subs they were able to make.

“But our fans were fantastic throughout the game - it’s just a shame we couldn’t get a goal for them.

"I’m really proud of the players and we’ll dust ourselves down and look forward to Saturday.”
