Matchday Guide | Grimsby (A)

25 April 2023

Crewe Alexandra travel to Cleethorpes on Tuesday as they take on Grimsby Town in a rearranged League Two fixture (7:45pm).

Lee Bell’s side will aim to get back to winning ways following defeat to champions Leyton Orient last weekend. They come into the game with three victories in their last five outings.

The Opposition

Grimsby sit 13th in League Two on 55 points with three games left of a mixed campaign. The highlight of their season was a remarkable FA Cup run to the quarter-final, beating the likes of Luton Town and Southampton before being knocked out by Brighton in the last eight.

The Gaffer

Paul Hurst took over at Blundell Park in December 2020 for a second spell as manager, taking the Mariners straight back up to the Football League in June 2022.

A one-club man player with Rotherham United, he has achieved two promotions with the Lincolnshire side and nearly guided Shrewsbury Town to the Championship in 2017, losing the play-off final to Millwall.

Fighting Talk

Gavan Holohan (Grimsby midfielder): “We’re in games and when we're on top we don’t capitalise and are not clinical enough. We have chances, but the moment seems to pass us quite often.”

Kenny Lunt (Alex Player Development Manager): “We want to finish as high as possible and win every single game, nothing has changed. There are four games left and we want to take all 12 points, they won't be easy - there are some tough tests.”

Team News

Grimsby have no fresh injury concerns coming into the midweek fixture. Crewe will remain without Zac Williams and Connor O’Riordan, while Rio Adebisi will be assessed.

Head-to-Head

Grimsby hold the edge over past meetings between both clubs, winning 27 of the 67 clashes, with the Alex winning 25 times. Earlier this season, Grimsby were 3-0 winners at Mornflake Stadium, as well as beating the Alex 4-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Officials

Darren Handley will take charge of proceedings on Tuesday evening, having last officiated the Alex in January 2020, a 3-1 away defeat to Swindon Town.

He will be assisted by Ivan Stankovic and Daniel Woodward, with Bradley Hall appointed as fourth official.
