Women Report | Crewe Alexandra 1-2 Tranmere Rovers

6 September 2022

  • Crewe Women fall to defeat despite half-time stalemate
  • Injury crisis continues
  • Garner grabs her fourth of the season
Despite the injury crisis getting strong, Crewe Alex Women put on a spirited fight against Tranmere Rovers at the weekend.
Beth Ragdale came close with a header from a corner but a superb stop from the Tranmere stopper saw her collide with the woodwork and require treatment. It was the visitors turn to test the 'keeper with stand-in goalkeeper Emma Lambourne making a good save low down to keep the scores level. Crewe continued to push forward and should of taken the lead but the woodwork came to Tranmere's rescue on two occasions.
Unfortunately, it ended up as de ja vu for Crewe, who again started the second-half slowly. A mistake at the back allowed the Rovers to take the lead with a wonderful effort from 25-yards out. Tranmere doubled their lead five minutes later when Garner failed to clear a corner and the ball dropped kindly in box for another Tranmere player to tap home.
This provoked a reaction from Crewe, with 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Garner scored a sublime effort from distance grabbing her fourth goal in five days. However it wasn't enough to salvage a point for the home side as some late pressure was brushed aside by Tranmere.
Speaking after the match, Head Coach, Matt Fisher said: "Unfortunately, Tranmere were too tough a test for us. They are a great side and I am proud we managed to push them until the last minute with our current situation taken into account. I know the results and league table don't make pretty reading at the moment, but we can not panic.
"We have the tools to get out of this and our last two performances have been superb in comparison to opening two games. I can't thank the fans enough for their support, they have been brilliant. I can assure you that the points will come."
