U21 Report | Crewe 0-0 Burnley

26 September 2022

  • Jackson's Reds left to rue missed chances
  • First clean sheet of the 22-23 PDL campaign
  • More minutes completed for Lachlan Brook and Rio Adebisi

Mike Jackson's Under-21 side collected their first clean sheet of the season but will feel dissapointed it wasn't three after their blistering first-half display.

Joel Tabiner forced Sam Waller in to a couple of fine saves early on after impressing once again for the Under-21s.

It was Crewe again that were looking to find an opener as Brentford loanee Brook watched his effort cannon back off the upright.

At the other end of the pitch, Owen Dodgson created Burnley's best attempt of the first half. His low-driven shot was whiskers away from finding the bottom corner of Dave Richards' net.

Burnley were keen to get on the scoresheet before the half-time interval, but Richards was alert to stop Marcel Lewis by tipping his powerful strike from range behind for a corner.

Immediately after the restart, Michael Mellon for the visitors looked to get on the end of Will Hugill's cross, but the pace of the ball was too much for the forward.

After controlling the majority of the first-half Crewe were made to defend for majority of the second as Mellon, Mark Helm & Joe Bauress all saw shots blocked by a number of Red bodies.

With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Charlie Finney looked to take matters into his own hands by going on a mazy run, but he couldn't quite match the quality with his shot at Waller.

The fixture finished like a game of tennis as both sides looked to break the deadlock. Evans could only direct his free header wide with Helm's dipping effort going just over the top of Richards' goal.

The Under-21s will return to PDL action on Monday 3 October as they travel to Hull City (7pm).
