We have to make most of home advantage, says boss

15 September 2022

Alex Morris is urging his players to get back to winning ways on Saturday, as Crewe Alexandra aim to make Mornflake Stadium a ‘fortress’.

The boss has stressed the fact that home form is key to his plans this term, and he is targeting three points when Crawley Town visit.

Morris said: “You have to look at home games differently. Since football began 150-or-so years ago, I’d have thought every team has a better home record than away. That’s not a coincidence.

“At home, you have a routine, and a routine in life as well as in football allows you to be successful. But away from home it’s always different depending on who you are playing.

"Schedules are different, you might be staying overnight. It all presents an extra challenge.

“Plus, you get the bulk of the support behind you at home, so we are certainly looking to make sure our home record is very strong this season.

“I was really disappointed we lost to Stevenage, because we want to make this place a fortress. We want to get back to winning ways against Crawley.

The manager has been evaluating The Railwaymen’s performance in the 1-1 draw at Hartlepool United on Tuesday, and his backroom team are considering how to make improvements.

However, with just two defeats in eight League Two games, and lying 10th in the standings, there is no need for radical changes.

Morris added: “Over the next couple of days we are going to think very carefully about personnel and tactics, so we can have more of an impact in the Crawley game.

“We have to be much better in the attacking half, but I’d imagine another 20 teams are saying that too.

“We’ll get to work. We need to improve on all aspects of the game that weren’t good enough at Hartlepool.

“However, we are very mindful of the fact that consistency is important in football, and we’ve made very few changes from week to week.

“We want to get better, but we don’t need to make wholesale changes because we are doing okay. Not brilliant, not poorly, just okay and the results reflect that.
