Crewe Alexandra twice fought back from behind to snatch a thrilling extra-time 3-2 victory over Mansfield Town in the FA Youth Cup first round.
The Stags took an early lead through McKeal Abdullah, and then looked to be heading through when Ben Whelan made it 2-1 in the first period of extra time.
However, Crewe’s Slovakian youth international Matus Holicek twice equalised from the penalty spot, and the tie appeared to be destined for a shootout at Mornflake Stadium.
Calum Agius nearly won it in the 110th minute but his header crashed off the crossbar.
But two minutes later substitute Ty Webster popped up with a clinical finish to send The Railwaymen into round two.
It was a spirited display from the side led by Ryan Dicker and David Vaughan, as Alex Morris and the club’s senior management team, and Mansfield boss Nigel Clough, watched on.
Now Crewe will wait to learn who they will face in the second round, which must be played before November 26.
Crewe: Flint, Bhatti, Sant (Webster), Crolla (Robinson), Senior, Washington, Agius, Lunt, Martins (Nolan), Holicek, Woodcock (Allport).
