Interim boss Bell quickly returns focus to league clash

27 November 2022

Lee Bell says his focus has already switched to Friday’s visit of Newport County, after Crewe Alexandra were knocked out of the FA Cup.

The Railwaymen were beaten 3-0 by League One promotion-chasers Barnsley, ending their participation in the competition at the second-round stage.

But while the interim-manager was disappointed at the nature of the Oakwell side’s goals, he has already returned his attention to League Two.

Bell said: “I don’t want the players sulking all weekend, we’ve got a big game coming up on Friday and our focus is on that now already.

“No moping and sulking, we need to get to work again.”

Crewe started with a plan to frustrate Barnsley and hit them on the break. The players executed the scheme well for the most part, but their efforts were undermined by mistakes.

Bell added: “It was working according to how we thought it was going to pan out, with us getting some counter attacks.

“But to concede a goal like their first, from a corner, is a kick in the teeth and changes the mentality.

“We allowed them to have a lot of ball at the back and our plan was to open up more later on, if the game was in the balance.

“But we conceded two more goals before the hour. All the homework and hard work we’ve done, it was undone by avoidable goals.
