Mika Departure Only Refocuses Striker Search

Morris steps us search for new number 9

Crewe Alexandra boss Alex Morris says that Mikael Mandron’s decision not to remain at the club has only intensified the club’s search for a new striker.

Morris says that the number 9 position will be vital to what we do in the final third next season in terms of approach play and ‘it is a position that we have focussed on intently’.

Mandron made it known of his decision not to accept the club’s offer of a new contract and Morris although disappointed says that the Frenchman departs with our best wishes.

Morris told the club’s official website: “We made no secret of the fact that we wanted Mika to stay. I was open and honest with him all the way through and he was with me. I told him that the offer would remain on the table but that we would also be looking at possible targets.

“He understood and accepted that and he was fully aware of our situation.

“In the end he came back with his decision and there is every indication that he will look to stay in League One. He is a great fella and he goes with our best wishes.

“As a result we need a replacement for that position to give us the firepower we will need to score the goals we need and to compliment what we already have here with Chris Long, Bassala and Dan.

“There is a certain type we would like. It doesn’t have to be like for like but the number 9 position will be crucial to what we want to do. They not only have to score goals but also facilitate the wide players to score goals as well by occupying the centre halves. They will have to get us in behind, hold the ball up and link up the play.

“It is a position that we have focussed on intently and we are looking at potential replacements.”
