Porter: "Important Now We Kick On To Give Ourselves A Fighting Chance"

3 March 2022

Chris Porter says that it is important that Crewe Alexandra build on what he described was a ‘massive win’ at Cheltenham Town last weekend. The veteran forward provided a superb assist for Chris Long’s early opener at the Jonny Rocks Stadium and although Crewe were pinned back early in the second half, it was Porter in the right place to direct a late header home from a corner to secure the 2-1 win.

The Railwaymen now play host to Wycombe this weekend before we have a re-arranged fixture against Portsmouth on Tuesday evening and Porter says it is vital that we 'kick on now and continue to improve’.

Ahead of our home meeting with Gareth Ainsworth’s side, Porter said: “It was a massive win and a massive three points for us at Cheltenham. A win had been a long time coming, a goal from me had been a long time too, so it was brilliant performance from us. Everyone worked their socks off to a man and we will need more of the same in the remaining games.

“It is such a young squad and credit to them for going to a place like Cheltenham and performing like that and getting a result. It wasn’t necessarily pretty football all the time, but we did the other side of the game really well to get a result.

“That has to be a catalyst now. We have to kick on and make sure we get some more wins and give ourselves a chance of staying up.

He added: “Over the last few performances, we have steadily been improving and we have to make sure new keep on improving to get some more wins as quickly as possible.”
