David Artell says that with the help of a new Head of Recruitment, Crewe Alexandra have to ‘get more signings right than wrong’ this summer. The Alex boss admits that signings have been hit and miss over the last couple of seasons and he spent time in January trying to offload players as well as bringing in new faces.

The turnaround of players has been large and Artell is aiming for a more efficient and settled squad of players to take us into the 2022/23 campaign.

The club will appoint a new Head of Recruitment shortly and bring in an extra analyst to aid the recruitment department.

Artell told the club’s official website: “Any transfer window is an opportunity to improve, especially the summer one where you have more time to assess and go for targets.

“With the resources we are putting in place, it is important that we get more right than wrong going forward. It is always difficult and recruitment can be difficult that is why we needed some help in that department.

“It wasn’t easy heading into the last summer window. We basically lost two wide players, one of them right on deadline and the two lads decided to retire and leave the game. When that happens so late on, it does give you a bit of a mountain to climb and that is not an excuse, it’s a fact.

“We have to go into this summer, fully prepared and that will give us more chance of getting them right and making the right decisions.”
