"Our Kids Appreciate The Pathway Of Opportunity Here"

10 June 2022

Lee Bell says that with a number of the club’s young players signing professional contracts it only bodes well for others coming through the Academy system.

Crewe signed eight of the club’s promising youngsters to pro deals and substantial progress is also being made with young forward Connor Salisbury.

Zac Williams and Connor O’Riordan went on to really make their mark in the first-team and a number of them were handed debuts by former boss David Artell. It was certainly a baptism of fire as Crewe battled against relegation.

The club’s assistant manager has reiterated the need to play games and learn their trade in a Crewe Alexandra shirt first or risk getting lost in the Under-23 system elsewhere.

Bell told us: “All can you do is be honest with the players and they know the pathway to our first team. They know if that if they train well and assert themselves for the Under-23s then they will get their opportunities here.

“We are always trying to get the message across to them. It is just important that they play games and learn their trade. They can make some mistakes here and learn and it is vital for their improvement.

“Then when they get that experience and they are ready to move onto bigger and better things we won’t stand in their way. I always believe that if you play games then in the end you get what you deserve in the end. You reach the level you should be at and we hope some of the ones we have signed will go on and have a great career.

“They have a chance to play for a fantastic football club, learn and then go on and for me it is a win, win situation.”
