Kenny: "Real Competition For Places Should Push Everyone On"

31 January 2022

Assistant says important to fill those gaps with quality and make sure we give it a real go to stay in this league.

Kenny Lunt believes that the arrival of four new faces and possibly more coming in before the closure of the transfer window tonight will create the competition for places to in turn enhance performances.

The Crewe Alexandra staff are all working hard on other transfer targets coming in ahead of this evening’s ultimate deadline and Lunt says the arrival of new players will only increase the competition and belief in the squad.

The club’s assistant manager told the club’s official website: “We felt we were missing a bit in a few positions and we wanted players who could come in and fill those voids and provide that real competition for places.

“We felt we were a bit short and that is why we had to name three scholars on the bench lately, who are not quite ready. It is not their fault and they are going to be very good players, but we felt we need to improve in most areas. We have been able to go out and get some good players in and provide that competition.

“If we can get one or two more in today, then it would really be close to having two players for every position and that is what we want to create between now and the end of the season.

“We did have that last season and when we got promoted and having that competition for places pushes everyone on. It is now the case that if you have two poor games on the spin then you are very unlikely to get a third chance and someone else will step into the team and take your place.

Lunt added: “We want everyone to push each other, to get better and if we can all do that then we will start winning matches and build some momentum. “
