Artell: "We Need That Resilience In Our DNA"

18 January 2022

David Artell says that he is pleased that the club youngsters are showing that real grit and fight that is often not associated with Crewe Alexandra teams. The Alex boss was delighted with the clean-sheet against Shrewsbury and although we couldn’t find that goal at the other end to win the game, he took plenty of positives from the resolute performance.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official website: “We showed the other side of our game against Shrewsbury and that was the most pleasing thing for me. We had 8 Academy lads starting the game and 13 in the squad and that side of it is not really in their DNA because they have not been brought up that way.

“It has to be if we want to be really successful.

“They are young lads and some of them are still finding their feet at first-team level and they are going to find it tough at times. We found it tough at Burton but on Saturday they stood up to it against Shrewsbury and we perform like that defensively and show that determination to keep the ball out of our net then we will be fine.

“We limited their penalty box entries and defended really well as a team and that was the most pleasing thing to take from the game.”
