Boss says Wales Under-21 defender hitting the right consistency levels.
David Artell says that the club’s young Welsh International, Billy Sass-Davies, has fully deserved his new contract which will take the defender through to the summer of 2024.
Sass-Davies, 21, has established himself in the Alex back line in recent weeks and has shown the consistency levels to hold off the competition provided by more senior players, Donervon Daniels and Terrell Thomas.
Sass-Davies, who came through the club’s renowned Academy structure has now made 22 first team appearances for Crewe in all competitions, as well as enjoying a number of successful loan spells with non-league clubs in his younger days.
Artell fully believes that a stint away from home on loan at Yeovil has made the centre-half more mature in a short space of time. Sass-Davies made 22 appearances for the Glovers in the National League before returning to Crewe.
Artell told the club’s official website: “The key to becoming a reliable defender is consistency and producing those magical performances. Billy has become consistent this season until the last game (vs Burton) really. We are still waiting for that magical performance from him which would be a clean-sheet, dominating a top striker and scoring a goal at the other end.
“That is a big ask for a young defender trying to still find his feet but that is the next step he has to try and get to. We will continue to push him without expecting too much too soon but we has made a really good start and he deserves his new deal.”
