A Chance To Upset The Odds And Restore Some Pride

15 February 2022

Crewe gear up for severe Wigan test this evening

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell says that a chance to upset the odds against Wigan Athletic this evening can restore some lost pride after losing two successive games 4-1 to Plymouth Argyle and Accrington Stanley.

Crewe have suffered five defeats on the bounce and need to turn our fortunes around and quickly if we are to pull ourselves out of the relegation picture. There are still enough games to do that but Artell appreciates that time is running out.

Talking ahead of our trip to Wigan, Artell told the club’s official website: “There is only Rotherham who have probably been more consistent this season than Wigan, so we know the challenge we face.

“We know it will be difficult but we have to go there and certainly be harder to score against and harder to beat. It is a chance for us to restore some pride with a good performance and if we can do that and hang in the game at crucial times then who knows.

“Doncaster won at Sunderland when no-one expected them too, so anything can happen.

“The first thing we need to do is make sure we get on the ball and be brave in possession. We also have to cope better with set-backs, be a stray pass or us conceding a goal. We have conceded a goal and it has been catastrophic in the last two games.

“It has led to us conceding three goals in a short space of time and we cannot let that happen if we are wanting to remain in games.”
