Artell: "Plymouth Took Full Advantage Of Our Lack Of Effort And Mistakes"

9 February 2022

David Artell was left infuriated by the way we ended up conceding four goals to Steven Schumacher’s Plymouth Argyle side last night. Crewe Alexandra had produced one of their brightest starts to a game for a while to deservedly take the lead through Chris Long, but were blown away by the visitors impressive start to the second period. Crewe’s lead quickly dissolved with the Pilgrims hitting three goals in 11 minutes.

The clinical Ryan Hardie completed his hat-trick to make it 4-1 with just over five minutes left.

The Alex boss told us after the heavy home defeat: “Against Rotherham, we conceded an early goal trying to do the right thing. It was a mistake that can be forgiven because we are trying to play and I take responsibility for that because I want them to play football that way.

“That goal was almost forgivable if you like but the ones against Plymouth were not acceptable, they were not forgivable because I didn’t think they had to work hard for any of their goals.

“They have come about due to our lack of effort and our mistakes and if the players think that it is acceptable then they are at the wrong club and probably in the wrong sport. Some spoke after the game and I think we were all in agreement that that level of performance and effort was not acceptable. “
