Artell: "That Was A Bit Harsh On Us Tonight"

22 February 2022

David Artell felt his Crewe Alexandra side did enough to take something from tonight’s game against Oxford United. Crewe were beaten 1-0 courtesy of a scrappy goal from our point of view and it was harsh on a Crewe side who had worked hard to remain in the contest and take the game to them  a lot more in the second half.

The Railwaymen showed a real spirit and had enough possession in the second period to have taken at least a point against the division’s top scorers.

Following the 1-0 defeat to the U’s the Crewe boss told us: “I thought we deserved to win the game but we haven’t.

“I thought Oxford played really well in the first 20 minutes. They were very bright in their play but after that I thought it was evens stevens in the second half of the first half.

“In the second half I thought we dominated most of it and we were an inch away from taking the lead when Chris Long hit the underside of the crossbar. If that goes in then we possibly go on to win the game 1-0. Instead we have conceded a scruffy goal and ended up losing the game.

“I didn’t think we deserved that tonight. They have a free-kick and it has fallen to him and he has tucked it in.

“We tried to play some good stuff and play the right way and another night we get a bit more. It is just that that extra bit of quality and bit of luck to get us a goal. We were  a bit unfortunate tonight and it was a bit harsh on us because the lads gave everything.”
