David Artell says he has made his decision on who will be goal for this weekend’s game at Accrington Stanley and has challenged both Dave Richards and Will Jaaskelainen to rediscover their form after both have made recent mistakes in games.
After a mistake against Rotherham for their opening goal, the Alex boss left Richards out for the trip to Gillingham and his replacement Jaaskelainen performed admirably on his return at the Priestfield Stadium.
Against Plymouth on Tuesday evening, the Finnish goalkeeper saved a first half penalty but then was not decisive as he usually is for three of Plymouth’s four goals.
Artell told us: “Everyone makes mistakes and it is highlighted more so for a goalkeeper because making one can often lead to a goal. I don’t think either of them have covered themselves in glory recently but I have a decision to make.
“Trig wasn’t quite at it against Rotherham and that is why I left him out for Gillingham when Will came in and did well. Then he made the mistakes he did against Plymouth after saving a penalty and you have to consider things again.
“We have to help them because it is a specialist position and like I say their mistakes are usually punished by them conceding a goal, but they have both been good and consistent in the past and that is why the position is so competitive because there isn’t much between them.”
