Artell: "This Club Wouldn't Be Where It Is Today Without John Bowler"

17 February 2022

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell pays his own tribute to the incredible achievements of our former chairman.

David Artell has paid his own fitting tribute to the club’s former chairman John Bowler, who sadly passed away on Tuesday.

Bowler appointed Artell as manager in January 2017, giving him his first taste of management at the age of 36.

Artell say that the unwavering support, advice and knowledge he was given by our longest-serving Chairman will be something that he will be forever be grateful for.

David told the club’s official website:  “John was a terrific man and I think everyone who had the privilege of knowing him or meeting him would say the same. He was extremely intelligent, a true gentleman and he was everything you would wish for from a chairman, a boss, colleague and friend.

“He was just a really lovely man and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

“He was so sharp. He knew a hell of a lot about life and about football. He knew the game inside out. I don’t think you could ever teach him anything new. You could suggest a new version of something and he would listen, support you in what you wanted to do and he knew how to run a football club.

“This club wouldn’t be where it is today, with the facilities we have, the stadium, the Academy, the Soccer Centre, everything we have without the likes of John, before him, Norman Rowlinson, and Dario. They helped built this Football Club and I will forever be grateful for the support he always gave me and I think the supporters fully appreciate the incredible contribution he made to the club and the community over 40 years.”
