Match Report: Crewe 3 Harrogate 0

6 August 2022

  • Crewe victorious in first ever clash with Harrogate
  • Back-to-back wins to start a season for first time in 28 years
  • Courtney Baker-Richardson registers first goal for The Railwaymen

Crewe Alexandra produced a polished performance to record a 3-0 victory over Harrogate at Mornflake Stadium.

Late first-half goals from Dan Agyei and Kelvin Mellor set the platform for a second-consecutive three-point haul. And substitute Courtney Baker-Richardson wrapped it up with a third on 77 minutes.

It was a thoroughly-deserved three points for Alex Morris's men, who controlled much of the game and were clinical in front of goal when the opportunities arose.

The success has left them second in League Two at this early stage.

The gaffer named a side unchanged from the one that won at Rochdale, and the first half was largely uneventful as two well-organised sides promoted and probed.

Callum Ainley dragged a shot just wide and Lachlan Brook saw an effort superbly palmed wide by visiting keeper Pete Jameson, while Arthur Okonkwo made one routine stop at the other end.

But as the half wore on the Alex asserted more pressure and, after Bassala Sambou saw a curling effort tipped for a corner, the hosts hit the front on 44 minutes. Zac Williams met a corner and Agyei was on hand to nod home inside the six-yard box.

Harrogate had barely settled when it was 2-0, in stoppage time. Ainley drifted a corner over from the left and Mellor towered over everybody to power his first goal in his second spell for Crewe.

After the restart, Harrogate started on the front foot but struggled to penetrate a resolute Alex defence. Okonkwo earned his first career clean sheet with a smart stop from Alexander Pattison in the 82nd minute in what was the clearest opening for the away side.

And by that time, the three points had already been sealed when a slick move down the right created a shooting chance for Ainley. When his effort was blocked, Baker-Richardson was on hand to tuck home at the second attempt.

The manager used all five substitutions as his side saw the game out comfortably.
