"Foundations Are There With The Youngsters"

11 April 2022

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell says that the foundation of a new emerging team is there to bring success back to the club after six members of the Under-18s made their debuts this season.

Young professionals Joe Robbins and Tyreece Onyeka have also marked their senior debuts this campaign.

Defender Lewis Billington was the latest to mark his debut for the club, starting at Doncaster at the weekend after Zac Williams was unable to play after feeling unwell in the warm-up.

Sean Lawton was also introduced late on as a substitute as Crewe lost their League One status following a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

Artell believes that given time, the new bunch of young professionals will have Crewe competing once again for promotion out of League Two.

Artell told the club’s official website: “I don’t think there will be a club who has given more debuts than us this season. We had another one with Lewis Billington, who I thought was terrific for his first game.

“We have to build a new team and people forget that Perry Ng had not made his first team debut before his 19th birthday and we have played 17, 18 year olds this season for whatever reason. That is the situation we find ourselves in and however it has come about, the young players have come in and by and large done really well for us.

The boss added: “They have taken their opportunities and some of them have played a few games now, so they have to build on that going into the summer and into next season.”
