Finney Is Getting There After His First Goal Since January

4 October 2021

Finney on target is major boost after last season's injury lay-off

David Artell believes that despite Saturday’s disappointing end to the game against Cambridge United there were still positives to take from the game and first-half performance.

One of those plus points was the first goal of the seasons from midfielders, Oli Finney and Scott Robertson. It was Robertson’s first senior goal after signing on loan from Glasgow Celtic and Finney’s first goal since he returned from his broken leg. Finney, 23, had not scored since scoring against AFC Wimbledon back in January 2021. He suffered his injury at Shrewsbury three games later.

Artell: “There were some promising signs to take from Saturday and to see the two midfielders score was heartening. We need others to chip in with some goals, so that was a step in the right direction.

“Oli is getting there. He completed 70 minutes, so he is still getting there but he is working hard to get back to where he was before his injury. It has taken him a bit of time but Oli is a  good player and he scores goals, so we will keep working with him.

“Oli’s situation is similar to that of the team’s really. It is those small, progressive, steps to get where we want to be and Oli is the same.”
