David Artell says that Crewe Alexandra have to stop conceding ‘silly goals’ after Sunderland punished our mistakes in emphatic fashion last night. Crewe lost 4-0 to Lee Johnson’s side at Mornflake Stadium and Artell says that it was a stiff learning curve against one of the promotion favourites.
The home defeat leaves Crewe 23rd in League One with a trip to Wycombe Wanderers coming up at the weekend.
The Alex boss told the club’s official website: “We started the game well and I thought we were the better team for the first 20 minutes but we conceded the first goal and that flattened us a bit. We then conceded a second goal in that spell.
“We then conceded a third goal 10 minutes into the second half from a corner and it was done and dusted. We gave away silly goals and we got punished for making mistakes.
“We are finding it tough at the moment and it has become the story of our season. Sunderland were clinical with their finishing and you have to give them credit for that. They are a top team in this league and have very good players.
“What was disappointing that most of it was self-inflicted. Sunderland didn’t have to work too hard for their goals and the goals killed us.
He added: “The intensity of our performance was a lot better than Saturday but we can’t give goals away like we did.”
