David Artell says that tonight’s 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the Football League Trophy has given him food for thought.
Crewe progressed to the knockout stages of the competition with a game to spare.
David Artell told the club’s official website: “It was an opportunity for some of them and the performance showed that they could step up and are more than capable of doing that against good players.
"I think we deserved to win. I think they had the penalty, which I felt was harshly given because Massey has whacked it from 3 yardsd away and he has given handball.
"They got in behind once more but other than that I cannot remember Trig having to make a save really, so that was good. It was fairly comfortable.
“It has given me food for thought and that is the most pleasing thing.
“Trig (Richards) has a good record of saving penalties and that isn’t luck. He prepares for them, as does Will and that is credit to John Dillon as well. We study the clips of the takers and it pays off.
“It was a tough group with two more League One sides and Wolves Under-21s, so to get through with a game to spare is a good achievement. It is good to get through because we have had two difficult games and we will look forward to the Wolves game and take it from there when the knockout stages comes round.”
