U23 Report: Crewe 2-1 Peterborough

3 November 2021

A clinical Crewe performance brings home all three points!

Alex Morris’ Under-23s make it back-to-back wins with a 2-1 victory over 10 man Peterborough United.

Peterborough had most of the possession during the game, but the Alex had the better chances. With goals coming from Oli Finney who showed excellent composure to lob the keeper for the first. The second ended with Connor O’Riordan finding both posts with an unlucky effort which rebounded out to Salisbury who slotted into an empty net.

Peterborough finished the last ten minutes with 10-men as Kai Corbett was shown a second yellow for a late challenge on Lundstram.

During the first half, Tom Booth was the busier of the two ‘keepers making several superb saves to keep it level. The first of which came in the 10th minute where Peterborough’s Kobe Chong connected with a half volley which flew to the left of Booth, who got across well.

Our first attempt on goal came 19 minutes in. A good run down the left by Tabiner allowed him to pick out Finney at the front post who had a sighter with a good effort just wide of the top corner.

Another sensational Booth stop denied Corbett of a certain goal as he nipped in front of Williams at the front post, flicking the ball towards the top corner.

The first goal came after 37 minutes, as Regan Griffiths found Finney in behind with a great ball from the centre of midfield. Finney gets close to the Peterborough number 1 and dinks it over him to put the Railwaymen in the lead.

Crewe saw it through to half-time with their lead intact.

The Alex struck again at the 55-minute mark. This time through an O’Riordan effort that hit the left-hand post before rolling across the goal line to hit the other post and ping out to substitute Salisbury who tucked it home and doubled the lead.

Peterborough brought one back through a soft penalty decision. An unlucky Booth went the right way but didn’t quite keep it out. Six minutes later Peterborough’s Corbett fouled Lundstram on the touchline and was sent for an early after he was shown a second yellow.

From then on, the Under 23s held on to take all three points. An excellent result as Alex Morris’ side now travel to Coventry next Tuesday.
