Under-23 Win And Performance At Forest Gives Gaffer Options

16 March 2021

Evans and Griffiths on target against Forest Under-23s.

David Artell admits that the performance of the club’s Under-23s at high-flying Notts Forest on Monday has given him some food for thought heading into the weekend first team fixture at Northampton. Alex Morris’ Under-23 side came away with a deserved win thanks to goals from Antony Evans and Regan Griffiths via the penalty spot.

Artell has impressed with the display and says that it is important that those out of the side keep pressure on those currently with the first-team shirts.

A disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Burton had Artell suggesting that ‘no-one could complain if they were left out of the side on Saturday’.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official website: “It was good that players got some game time under their belt for the 23s and Alex (Morris) told me that they have done well and he was pleased with them.

“Nottingham Forest take the Under-23s seriously. We do but it is more to do with development than results and the performance was good. Forest were 2nd in the league and although they focus on development as well, they also look at performance and the result.

“So it was a good performance and a good result for us and that is what we are looking for. We need the standard to be high and it certainly gives you food for thought on the back of a poor performance on Saturday.”
