The Boro Lads Have To Warrant Their Place Like Anyone Else

1 March 2021

David Artell believes that 18-year-old loanee defender, Nathan Wood, is set for a bright future in the game. The Middlesbrough born centre-half is with us until the end of the season and Artell says that now the England Youth International has had a few weeks to get to know us, he is beginning to show his qualities on the pitch.

Artell told the club’s official website: “We get on well with Middlesbrough. I like the way they run their club and Academy there and there are terrific people. They are straight forward and honest people and give it to you straight and we are just as honest about their players. I think they appreciate that.

“We are under no pressure to play Nathan or Stephen. They get selected on merit. We gave Nathan a couple of weeks to settle in and get to know us and he has done ever so well in the last two games and I need to get more out of Stephen. He can get some more out of himself as well.

“We want to get good players into our team and they are both good players. It doesn’t matter if they are 18 like Nathan or in their early 20s like Stephen, we are used to putting players of that age into our team here.

He added: “They both know that when they get their opportunities then they have to take it and warrant their place in the team like anyone else.”
