Artell: "We Have 10 Games Left To Do Something Very Special"

23 March 2021

Boss throws the challenge down to his squad to end the season as strong as possible and maybe gate-crash the top six with an unbeaten run.

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says his squad have 10 games to ‘do something very special’ this season and he has challenged them to mount a late surge towards the top six. An inconsistent sequence of results has seen us collect 11 points from our last seven games and fall down to 14th in the table. But still Crewe are currently just five points behind Charlton Athletic in the final play-off position and we do have a game in hand on them.

That would have made this weekend’s fixture at The Valley even tastier, but the match has been postponed due to International call-ups for the home side.

Artell wants his players to finish the season as strongly as possible and who knows where a strong unbeaten run could take us?

Crewe have 10 games left to end the season and if we can repeat the same outcome from those fixtures earlier in the season, we would actually finish on 68 points and have an outside chance.

Of course, that is easier said than done to repeat doubles over MK Dons, Oxford, Wigan, Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury and also pick up draws against Rochdale and Fleetwood – but nevertheless, the challenge is there.

Artell told the club’s official website: “We are on 51 points with ten games left. Getting 50 points was not the initial target and we are not satisfied with that. We want to see how far we can go.

“When we started out in the summer, we had the lowest budget in the league. If that is still the case I am not so sure, but we all know we won’t be far off.

“We are competing against clubs with huge budgets and resources and we have done okay. That is all it is for me because we can do better and we need to do better.

“We have 10 games to get ourselves in a much better position and do something special. That is the challenge and it is up to all of us to do it and prove it.”
