'Fans Will Have A Vital Role To Play On Their Return'

14 June 2021

David Artell says having fans back will get us over the line in some games like it did against Northampton last season.

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says he cannot wait to welcome back fans into the newly named Mornflake Stadium for the first time since Christmas when Wolverhampton Wanderers visit us in pre-season.

The Alex boss admits that last season ‘was never the same’ without supporters inside the stadiums and says that will have an important role to play again this coming season.

Artell told the club’s official website: “It was very different with the supporters. It was like it was emotionally detached and it will be terrific to have them back with us.

“They have an important part to play. When they were allowed back briefly in December, we scored in injury time against Northampton to win the game. Would that have happened if there were no fans in? I am sure it would have because they do drive and spur you on.

“Crewe have managed to survive without fans for a season but there will be a lot of clubs who will be absolutely desperate to get them back for financial reasons.

He added: “Everyone has had to cut their cloth accordingly and there will be a lot of clubs struggling if they cannot get back to full capacity and soon.”
