Lunt: "All About Being Ready For The Cheltenham Game"

19 July 2021

Crewe Alexandra’s assistant manager, Kenny Lunt, is pleased with the progress we have made in pre-season, but he says that results will always be secondary to performance and coming through the games unscathed.

Lunt says that all the preparation is put in place to make sure we are right on 7th August and then to carry those fitness levels into a gruelling nine month season.

Crewe defeated Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend thanks to Chris Long’s winner eight minutes into the second half at Mornflake Stadium and of course the Alex staff were pleased with the performance against a top flight side and the fact that we kept a clean-sheet too.

Kenny told the club’s official website:  “It is always nice to win but it doesn’t count for much in pre-season games. You are more interested in how we play, those little pattern of plays that we work on and how we are defensively.

“It is all about getting through the games and not picking up injuries. It is aiming for the start of August with everyone fit and having that match sharpness. We will be ready and all these pre-season games are designed to make sure we are.

“We were up against a good side in Wolves. Whoever plays for them is going to be a top player and you could see that with the way they moved the ball and their movement. We had to stay focussed to keep them out and that was pleasing.

“We had to concentrate on ourselves and developing those relationships on the pitch and there were some real positives to come out of it but some things we need to work on.”
