Lunt: "Great To Have Midfielders Back And Competing For Places"

19 July 2021

Assistant manager, Kenny Lunt, says it is good to have midfielders, Josh Lundstram and Oli Finney back with us after they missed a large chunk of last season due to injury.

Lundstram suffered a fractured ankle in November against Newcastle United’s Under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Finney suffered a broken leg away at Shrewsbury in January and both players didn’t return until the final game of last season against the Shrews. They came on as a second half substitutes in that game and both have made a successful return to pre-season.

Ahead of our home pre-season friendly against Stoke City, Lunt told us: “It is always good to have as many players available as possible. We were without Josh for a lot of last season and we lost Oli for the second half of the season when he was coming into some real form for us.

“It happens in football and you have to get on with it, but they are good players and it only makes the competition in midfield even healthier if they are both fit and playing well.

“They came on in the last game of last season (against Shrewsbury) because we wanted them to experience the tempo again. It would have been an indication of the level they needed to get to again.

“They knew they had to work hard after playing 20, 25 minutes in that game and in fairness to them they have both come back in good shape.

Lunt added: “They will be fighting for their place, like the rest of them, and it will be interesting to see who has played well enough to stat that first game of the season against Cheltenham. That is what all the players should be aiming for.”
