Artell: "Balance Between Attack & Defence Has To Improve"

18 January 2021

Gaffer still looking for improvement despite going eight unbeaten in League One.

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell is looking for a better balance in attack and defence to improve our chances of winning games. Crewe are unbeaten in the past eight matches in League One, but have drawn four of those games.

Crewe host Bristol Rovers this evening looking to claim three points and Artell says that the balance between goals scored and conceded needs to be better.

He said: “We have conceded more goals than I would have liked but it is about striking that balance. We haven’t conceded too many but it could be better.

“We had a period where we looked really solid and were not conceding many and that was to the determinant of our attacking play.

“It is about getting that balance right between creative and being resilient. That remains the challenge and we spoke about it with the players after the Plymouth game.

“I don’t think there are many teams that have really caused us a lot of problems. Portsmouth did but most of that came from our own mistakes and Rochdale did in the second half but they are scoring goals like they are going out of fashion at the moment!

“The only other one was up at Sunderland. They were impressive on the night. So if someone had said that in the first half of the season, the only real times we have been really tested is at Portsmouth and Sunderland away from home, then we would have taken it.

He added: “We will work on both ends of the pitch. There is still more improvement to come.

"To go to Plymouth, who have the best home record in the league and restricted them to long range efforts and a goal from a penalty; was a step in the right direction after what happened at Rochdale.”
