Artell: "Young Full-Backs Can Step Up No Problem"

20 January 2021

Crewe Alexandra manager, David Artell, says that Perry Ng fully deserves his move into the Championship after years of service to the club – but he has reinstated that one player’s departure will mean an opportunity for others.

With Ng completing his move to Cardiff City yesterday, his obvious replacement Luke Offord was then forced off with injury in the enthralling 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers last night.

Artell once again turned to youngster Travis Johnson and he then had to do it on the other side of the pitch as well when Harry Pickering was forced off with a back spasm. Rio Adebisi had to step up from the bench for his first involvement in League One.

Artell told the club’s official website: “When someone moves on or is injured then it becomes an opportunity for someone else.

“If we have to play Travis and Rio on Saturday against Wimbledon then we will. That is what we do here. We would just say to them, go and then, go and show what you can do.

“Go and show your years of development and education here at this football club on the League One stage. That is what it is about.

“Travis has had a taste of it now and has done ever so well when we have needed him. Rio has had an injury to overcome at the start of the season but he has come on and done well against Bristol Rovers when we needed him.

“They are not inexperienced youngsters to me, they have been here for a long time and know what is expected of them. We are what we are and the opportunities are there for them to take.”
