Artell: "Start Was Terrific At Morecambe But We Had To Create More"

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell was delighted with the way his side started against Morecambe on Wednesday night.

Artell says that the only thing that was missing from that positive start was a goal or two to show for our dominance.

Crewe forced four corners in the opening three minutes of the game and were on the front foot for the first 25 minutes without really creating enough chances to show for it.

Our former loan defender, Greg Leigh, then headed the home side in front against the run of play on 36 minutes and Crewe somehow went in at the interval trailing. Thankfully, well taken goals from Chris Porter and Luke Murphy swung the game back into our favour before the hour mark.

Artell told the club’s official website: “I thought we started the game against Morecambe really well and were by far the better side for the first half an hour but when you don’t create enough or take your chances then that can happen.

“You can concede against the run of play and I think we did but they recovered well and over the 90 minutes I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the game.

“I have been saying for a couple of months now that the performances were improving and the results should follow that. We had won 3 in 6 before Morecambe in all competitions, so we thought we were heading the right way.

“The only worry was that we had 18 days without a game and would they be a bit sluggish? But they have trained really well and they started exactly how we wanted them too.

He added: “Now we have to replicate that over what is going to be a busy schedule of fixtures for us.”
