Artell: "We Need To Stop Conceding Cheap Goals From The Penalty Spot"

19 April 2021

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell is dissatisfied that his side have conceded three penalties in successive matches. Omar Beckles was the latest to concede in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic and on this occasion, Will Jaaskelainen, couldn’t keep out Lee Evans’ well struck spot kick.

It was the first penalty to beat the Finnish stopper after he saved ones against Oxford and Portsmouth. The Crewe number one was unfortunate to see Oxford’s rebound straight back into the path of Cameron Brannagan to score.

Artell told the club’s official website: “We have conceded three penalties in three games and maybe it doesn’t look so bad because Will (Jaaskelainen) has saved two of them but it is such a cheap way to conceded a goal.

“We have got to avoid conceding goals like that and it is certainly something we have to learn from and be better at that. We have to improve on a number of things and not conceding penalties is a good a place to start as any.”
