Artell: "Really Pleasing To See Players Adapt"

20 April 2021

David Artell says there were a number of pleasing aspects from his side’s 2-0 win at Fleetwood Town this evening. Goals in each half from Owen Dale and another successful penalty from Chris Porter gave Crewe a deserved away win, but we also had Will Jaaskelainen to thank for another spot-kick save.

The Alex boss told the club’s official website: “That was a pleasing away performance in large parts. We did something different with the formation and different way of playing. We sprung it on them yesterday. We walked through things on the training ground and they took it on board and it is really pleasing that they can do that.

“We also had to change to 4-3-3 with 20 minutes left and we did that seamlessly. It could have gone one or two ways, you had a performance like that or it goes wrong.

“We wanted to find out about the players and learn things and we have done that as well. I am really pleased with the players and it gives us food for thought as a staff.

“I think that is the first time we have played three at back since I took over as manager and for them to pick that up like they did is very pleasing. Really good.

“For the first goal, Murph won it back and put it over to Owen and he was really calm with his finish.

“It was also no fluke that Will has saved another penalty. He is very good at saving them. We spoke about not conceding penalties and we have conceded another one but he has saved three of the four he has faced in the last four games. That isn’t a fluke, he was doing that out on loan at Nantwich four years ago.

He added: “Ports is a great bloke and a fantastic professional. I don’t think he has missed a penalty for us and that’s his job, he has a real enthusiasm to score goals. We don’t have to worry about Chris Porter.”
