Young defender shows he can score goals too!
Luke Offord continued his rapid rise at first-team level with his first senior goal in only his 13th appearance at the weekend.
Offord ghosted in to head home Callum Ainley’s excellent delivery to open the scoring in our comfortable 3-0 win over Wigan and David Artell says that the character and temperament shown by the 20-year-old defender.
Offord burst onto the scene in the second half of last season, forming a partnership with loanee Michael Nottingham as Crewe won promotion to League One as the season was cancelled in March due to Covid-19.
He has retained his place this season and Artell says the promising youngster continues to demonstrate his potential in the higher league.
The boss said: “Luke is much the same as he was when he played for me and Alex (Morris) for the Under-13s. He has a great character and temperament. He is hard as nails and is brave.
“He is never flustered. He is the sort of lad that if there was ever a fire in the building, he would lead everyone to safety without getting flustered. He would then jump into his car and go home.
“Luke has not been fazed by going into the team and then making the step up into League One. He is at the start of his career at senior level and he has to keep on improving but he can play centre-half, right-back, left-back and in midfield.
David added: “He has played 12, 13 games or whatever it is. He is making the right impression and has to keep heading in that direction.”
