Artell: "It Was Our Worst Performance So Far"

27 October 2020

Artell left frustrated after his Alex side cannot build on Doncaster win with points at home.

David Artell was left frustrated by his side’s performance as they failed to build on their superb 2-1 win at Doncaster Rovers at the weekend. League leaders, Lincoln City deservedly won 1-0 on the night with Harry Anderson netting five minutes before the break.

The Alex didn’t reach the heights of Saturday’s all-round display at the Keepmoat Stadium and we didn’t test Alex Palmer nearly enough in the Lincoln goal.

Following the 1-0 defeat at Gresty Road, the Alex boss said: “There weren’t many positives from tonight. We weren’t at the races tonight. We were flat and pedestrian and it was a poor performance.

“I think that was the worst performance of the season and I am not taking anything away from Lincoln, but I didn’t think they had to work too hard for their win tonight. We have to show more than we did and can’t rely on trying to score in the last 15 minutes, when we showed a bit of fight.

“You cannot be below par in League One, especially against the league leaders and there were too many below par performances and you cannot get away with it.

“I thought their two centre-halves had a bit of jolly up because we didn’t really create anything. We had a couple of chances that flashed across the goal and needed a touch here or there, but it wasn’t nearly enough from us.

“On another day, we could have scored in the closing stages and nicked a point but we are not kidding ourselves on. The final 15 minutes when we had a bit of go, should not disguise what I thought was a poor performance from us.

He added: “Lincoln out thought and out fought us and it was disappointing coming on the back of how we played at Doncaster. We need to do better and work out what the opposition are doing out on the pitch. We didn’t get to grips with that all night and although the subs came on and we went a bit longer, we didn't do enough. “
