Preview: Oxford United Away

17 November 2020

Crewe Alexandra travel to the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday night (7pm KO), as they face Oxford United in what will be ‘third time lucky’ for this fixture.  The Alex will be looking to secure back-to-back wins, after a 2-0 win against league leaders Peterborough United last time out.

The U’s last Sky Bet League One outing was a home win against Rochdale on 3rd November. Positioned 21st in the league table and only nine games played so far in the league its rather a “false” position for the Yellows.

Meanwhile, the Railwaymen can lift themselves as high as 11th with a win and will look to return to Cheshire with all three points like they did eight years ago.

Star Man: Matty Taylor

The 30-year-old began his career at the U’s making only a handful of appearances, before moving to Didcot Town and then onto North Leigh. After two years, he made the move to Forest Green Rovers scoring 22 goals in his three-year spell at the club, before moving to Bristol Rovers.

Taylor impressed in his time at Bristol Rovers as he scored 20 goals in their Conference Premier promotion season, including one in each of the play-off semi-finals against his former side, Forest Green. The following season, Taylor maintained his eye for goal, scoring 27 goals; was recognised as the Football League’s top goal scorer across all divisions.

January 2017 saw Taylor make the move to arch-rivals Bristol City. The first player to move directly between the two clubs since 1987. Scoring on his debut for the Championship side as well as helping his side progress to the EFL Cup semi-finals, he spent three years at the Robins.

In 2019, the forward re-joined the U’s on loan and continued his impeccable scoring form as he finished the COVID-19 stricken 2019/20 season as top scorer for the Yellows. Taylor has since joined the club permanently and has scored three goals already this season.
