Artell: "It Was A Really Pleasing Hard Fought Victory"

17 November 2020

David Artell hailed his side’s ‘proper away victory’ after the Alex secured back-to-back wins in League One following a 2-0 win over Oxford United this evening. Mikael Mandron notched his 7th goal of the season to put the Railwaymen in front at the Kassam Stadium before Owen Dale sealed the points will a well take finish in stoppage time.

Following the 2-0 win over the U’s, the Alex boss told the club’s official website: “It was a proper away victory from us. I think we were just about the better side in the first half and we were more dangerous in the final third. We didn’t do that often enough.

“Saying that I don’t think they had many shots on our goal and that was because we worked hard to make sure they didn’t. It was a hard fought victory from us because Oxford make it hard for you. This is not an easy place to come. They were in the play-off final three months ago and I know they are in false position in the table.

“I thought we were the better side over the 90 minutes and I think that it the fruits of our labour over the last few months. The performances have been there for a few weeks now but we weren’t scoring enough goals but we have scored two in the last two games and kept two clean-sheets.

“We are slowly building and the progress is there. We are evolving and where that takes us, I don’t know. It’s three points again. That is what is on the table and it doesn’t matter if that’s Peterborough, Oxford, Doncaster, Rochdale or whoever. That is what is at stake and we have managed to come to a difficult place and come away with the points.

“It was a different type of performance than Saturday. We deserved it in the end but it took a goal in stoppage time to make sure. The two subs in midfield, Murphy and Ainley came on and changed the momentum of the game back into our favour. Tom and Oli had put a shift in and those extra bit of legs got us over the line.

“Owen came on and gave us even more in the closing stages and he took his goal really well. The subs turned the tide back into our favour and overall, it was a really pleasing hard fought result.”
