Boss: "We Will Come Up Against A Different Sort Of Challenge In Gillingham"

3 November 2020

Crewe Alexandra manager, David Artell, says his side will come up against a different type of test against Steve Evans’ Gillingham this evening. The Gills have a similar record to Crewe in League One, having also won three of their opening games.

They arrive in South Cheshire tonight with 10 points to show from their opening 10 games. Crewe are two places above them in 15th place and have that rearranged game at Oxford to play as well.

Ahead of tonight’s home fixture behind closed doors, Artell says: “It will be a totally different challenge for us against Gillingham and we will have to be ready for it.

“They will be different from Ipswich, Hull and Sunderland. They will be more direct and that is not a criticism. You still have to be effective with it and Gillingham are.

“It is a different style of play from our own, but it can be successful and it is used throughout the leagues. Let me assure that Liverpool play direct. They hit their front three as quickly as possible and play from there.

“We will have to make sure that our football comes through and that when we do have possession that we don’t give it away cheaply. “

“Gillingham are effective. They will get the ball wide and cross it and we will have to stop that and be up to the challenge.”
