Artell: "Job Was To Get Through"

7 November 2020

Boss pleased with three goals and deserved victory in the FA Cup at former winners Bolton.

David Artell says his Crewe Alexandra side deserved to be progress to the second round of the Emirates FA Cup following a 3-2 win over Bolton Wanderers. The Alex boss was pleased that his side got back to winning ways and got the ‘job done’ to make sure we got ourselves into the hat on Monday evening.

Goals from Mikael Mandron, Oli Finney and Charlie Kirk gave Crewe a fully deserved 3-2 win and Artell says that he felt comfortable throughout the 90 plus minutes.

Following the 3-2 win, Artell told the club’s official website: “It was job done. The objective in a cup competition is to score more goals than the opposition to make sure you get through and we did that. It was pleasing to score some goals and ironically that is probably the worst we have played in the last four games and we have won the game.

“I always felt comfortable in the game and never felt in too much danger but we conceded almost immediately after going 3-1 up and that is just poor from us. There was the only one goal in it but on reflection I thought 3-1 was the way the result was going.

“I spoke with Mikael for an hour the other day after he came to me after the Gillingham game. He came to me to ask some questions and wanting to improve and I like that in a player. If that chat helped today, I’m not sure.

“He has scored one or two goals today. I am not sure who scored the third goal. They are pulling each others hair our about it back in the dressing room and I’ve let them get on with it! Mikael is loving it here and the chances we create. He has scored six or seven goals already which is more I think than he got last season at Gillingham, so that is a great return.

“Oli has a knack for scoring goals and it is a great skill to have. He gets into great positions to score goals and his touch was a bit heavy today. If he had taken it in a few times then he may have scored more than the one he did but it is a great trait to possess.

The boss added: “We are in the draw on Monday and when I’ve looked at a few of the results today, there have been some real shocks. Some haven’t made it through. We are in the highest division at the moment when the draw is made, so we will give anyone a game. It can be the luck of the draw and hopefully we can get through to the third round again.”
